Upper GI Scopy

Upper GI Scopy, also called upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or gastroscopy, is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure used to examine the upper digestive tract. It allows the doctor to view the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine using a thin flexible camera.

At Masters of Scopy, Upper GI Scopy may be recommended to identify the cause of persistent digestive symptoms and, when required, perform procedures such as biopsy or removal of selected polyps.

Why Is Upper GI Scopy Done?

Upper GI Scopy helps doctors directly examine the upper digestive tract and identify abnormalities that may not be detected through routine tests.

It may be recommended for symptoms or conditions such as:

• Persistent acidity, heartburn or indigestion
• Difficulty or pain while swallowing
• Persistent upper abdominal pain
• Nausea or vomiting without an obvious cause
• Upper gastrointestinal bleeding
• Suspected ulcers, inflammation or other abnormalities

How Is Upper GI Scopy Performed?

A thin, flexible endoscope with a camera is gently passed through the mouth into the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. The camera provides a clear view of the digestive tract on a monitor.

If an abnormal area is found, the doctor may take a small biopsy for laboratory examination. Selected polyps or other suitable lesions may also be treated during the same endoscopic procedure.

Preparation & Recovery

You will generally be asked to avoid eating and drinking for a specified period before the procedure so that the upper digestive tract can be examined safely. Inform your doctor about your medicines, allergies and existing medical conditions.

Mild throat discomfort, bloating or drowsiness may occur temporarily after the procedure. If sedation is used, you may need someone to accompany you home and should follow your doctor's instructions regarding driving and other activities.

Are There Any Risks?

Upper GI Scopy is generally well tolerated, but possible risks include bleeding, infection, reactions to sedation or, rarely, injury or perforation of the digestive tract. The risks may be higher when additional procedures such as polyp removal are performed.
