Cancer Surgeries

Cancer surgery is a treatment that removes cancerous tissue or affected organs when surgery is appropriate. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, surgery may be performed using conventional or minimally invasive techniques.

When Is Cancer Surgery Done?

Surgery may be recommended to remove a cancerous tumour, prevent or relieve complications, or as part of a wider cancer treatment plan.

• Removal of nearby tissues or lymph nodes when required
• Selected cancers where minimally invasive surgery is appropriate

Types of Cancer Surgery

The type of surgery depends on the cancer and the organ involved. Procedures may include tumour removal, organ surgery, lymph node removal or minimally invasive cancer surgery where suitable.

The surgical approach is decided after clinical examination, imaging, biopsy and other necessary investigations.

Minimally Invasive Cancer Surgery

For selected cancers, laparoscopic or other minimally invasive techniques may be used to access and remove affected tissue through smaller incisions.

• Less tissue disruption compared with some open surgeries
• Potentially less postoperative discomfort
• May support earlier recovery in suitable patients

Preparation & Recovery

Preparation depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include blood tests, imaging, biopsy review and other medical assessments. Your overall health is also considered before surgery.

Recovery varies according to the cancer, procedure and individual health. Additional treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be recommended when appropriate.

Are There Any Risks?

Cancer surgery carries risks such as bleeding, infection, anaesthesia-related complications and risks specific to the organ or procedure. Your surgical team will discuss the expected benefits and possible risks before treatment.
