Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to examine the inside of the large intestine, including the colon and rectum. A thin, flexible camera allows the doctor to identify abnormalities and, when required, perform selected treatments during the same procedure.
At Masters of Scopy, colonoscopy may be recommended to investigate digestive symptoms, identify abnormalities and support the early detection of certain colorectal conditions.
Why Is Colonoscopy Done?
Colonoscopy provides a direct view of the lining of the large intestine and can help identify the cause of persistent symptoms or detect abnormalities at an early stage.
It may be recommended for:- Persistent changes in bowel habits
- Blood in the stool or unexplained rectal bleeding
- Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort
- Unexplained weight loss or anaemia
- Screening or surveillance for colorectal conditions
- Evaluation of suspected polyps or other bowel abnormalities
How Is a Colonoscopy Performed?
A thin, flexible colonoscope with a camera is gently passed through the rectum into the colon. The camera provides a clear view of the intestinal lining on a monitor while the doctor examines the bowel for abnormalities.
If a polyp or suspicious area is identified, the doctor may take a biopsy or remove a suitable polyp during the procedure. The collected tissue can then be sent for laboratory examination.

Preparation & Recovery
Proper bowel preparation is important before a colonoscopy so that the doctor can clearly examine the colon. You will receive instructions about diet, bowel preparation, fasting and medicines before the procedure.
Temporary bloating, abdominal discomfort or drowsiness may occur after the procedure. If sedation is used, follow your doctor's instructions regarding driving and other activities after the examination.
Are There Any Risks?
Colonoscopy is generally well tolerated, but possible risks include bleeding, infection, reactions to sedation or, rarely, injury or perforation of the bowel. The risk may be higher when procedures such as polyp removal or biopsy are performed.
